What is an olive oil pie crust?

An olive oil pie crust is simply a pie crust that is made using olive oil in place of butter. I love to make this crust because it is the EASIEST way to bake a pie, and it tastes unbelievably good. You can whip it up in a few minutes and have it in the oven. The olive oil makes it extremely moist and soft, and it just melts in your mouth. Plus, there are only a few ingredients in this old fashioned dessert. Simply flour, salt, olive oil and raw milk (of course).

So if you’re looking for a change, or are simply all out of butter, check out this recipe below. My favorite brand of olive oil comes from one of my favorite companies, Jovial Foods. You can purchase their delicious and authentically Italian olive oil here.

What kind of pies can I bake with an olive oil crust?

The pie shown above is a peach pie. I love peach pie in August when the peaches are ripe at our local farm. Peach picking is very underrated when compared to apple or pumpkin. But it is definitely my favorite summer fruit to pick at our local farm here in Massachusetts. And this pie crust is so versatile! You can use it as a double crust with any sort of filling including; peaches, apples, cherries, blueberries. Or you could make it a single crust for chicken pot pie, mincemeat pie or even a chocolate pie. The possibilities are endless.

Why use oil instead of butter?

Pies are a comfort food. They are warm and filling, with just the right balance of sweetness. But when you are craving that comfort, sometimes you just want it ASAP. And an olive oil pie crust gets you a warm slice of heaven very quickly. This is because unlike butter, the fat in the oil is already melted. So the oil combines with the flour much easier. And the result is a flakey crust that in my opinion tastes even better than a butter crust. We just have to make sure that we don’t heat the oven to over 375 F because that is the smoke point of olive oil. So with that one rule in mind, I hope you enjoy this delicious olive oil pie crust.
